Who We Serve

Toussaint Academy serves high school age adolescents, ages 14 - 18, who meet the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s guidelines for homelessness. These guidelines include adolescents who do not have suitable homes to return to, adolescents whose families reside at St. Vincent de Paul Village, and adolescents who live in other homeless settings (i.e., the street or emergency shelters).

Toussaint Academy has a variety of alumni services and activities geared toward former residents of Toussaint. All former residents may access aftercare services to help them maintain stability and success. Aftercare services include case management, counseling, academic assistance, scholarships, affordable housing referrals, job placement, money management, access to medical/dental services, and alumni activities.

What We Provide

  • Academic Services. Residents attend the local high schools that best fit their individual needs. Toussaint Academy staff collaborates with high school staff, provides transportation, and offers onsite educational resources and enrichment classes. Students from the University of San Diego provide tutoring every weekday through an onsite Homework Lab.
  • Residential Services. Students reside in our 35-bed dormitory until graduation. Onsite staff provides each resident with supervision, security, life skills coaching, mentoring, and support.
  • Three Meals Daily . Three nutritional meals and two healthy snacks are prepared onsite daily. Each month, residents and staff participate in “Family Dinner Night” by preparing a home-cooked meal together.
  • Assessments. At intake, teens complete a psychosocial interview and a series of assessments to determine mental health risks, substance use and abuse, coping styles, and written language skills. Then, teens work with staff to develop a comprehensive case plan.
  • Individualized Case Management Services. Case managers work with students to help them set and achieve life goals. Students receive personalized care that may include chemical dependency services, counseling services, special education services, and advocacy.
  • Employment and Vocational Services . Short-term employment services include job training, internships, and job placement. Students open their own savings account and save at least 60% of their income. To establish long-term career goals, students participate in a vocational assessment and complete CHOICES, a career interest inventory. They receive ongoing career counseling, work readiness classes, and onsite and off-site job training.
  • Health Services. Case managers assist youth with health insurance. St. Vincent de Paul Village also offers residents free medical, dental, psychiatric, and chemical dependency services.
  • Counseling Services. Each student has access to individual and family counseling, group therapy, substance abuse counseling, and recovery groups.
